Home > About Us Our Mission Our Vision Iowa Youth Chorus is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing choral education, performance and touring opportunities for children ages 6 through 18.
Chorus Levels
The Chorus offers four levels of choirs to meet the needs of talented and interested young vocal musicians. They include:
Beginning Level - 6-7 year olds - no audition necessary
Primary Choir meets weekly in a music class format that includes music reading activities, basic singing skills, movement and song games. Primary Choir performs at Iowa Youth Chorus major concerts.
Beginning Level - 8-12 year olds - by audition
Children's Chorus is our beginning level choir where children learn the fundamentals of vocal technique, music reading and performing skills. Rehearsals are weekly at one of three locations in the metro area.
CHILDREN'S CHORUS 2006-2007 Girl's and Boy's Chorus
New this year are two choirs of just girls and boys that include choristers from Chorale for boys and girls separately. These choirs are the first in the metro area for just girls and boys. They perform 2 and 3 part music that will develop music reading skills and vocal technique.
Intermediate Level - 10-15 year olds - by audition
Chorale is the top treble choir in our choir school. This choir performs challenging repertoire in two, three and four parts and further develops music reading skills and vocal technique.
CHORALE 2006-2007
Advanced Level - 13-18 year olds - by audition
Youth Chorale is the international touring choir of the Iowa Youth Chorus. An elite group of mixed voices, Youth Chorale performs advanced choral literature of all styles and time periods.
YOUTH CHORALE 2006-2007
School Workshops The Iowa Youth Chorus is pleased to collaborate with public and private schools in Central Iowa. Through our school workshops, IYC conducting staff brings innovative ideas, topics and techniques to our colleagues and their students. Our choirs are also available to give concerts and master classes in local schools through our Singing in Schools program. Summer Camps In the summer months metro area youth are offered the opportunity to “try IYC on for size” through our summer camps and workshops. Weeklong camps are offered in June, July or August, each following a different theme. Summer Camp Tours Our intermediate and advanced choirs tour each year, regionally, nationally and internationally. Recent tours have included close to home exchange tours with choirs in other cities including the Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus, the North American Choral Company, Young Naperville Singers, and the Allegro Children’s Chorus. International tours have included participation in cultural exchanges, festivals and competitions in Europe, Central America and Canada. Iowa Youth Chorus has established an international reputation by receiving two silver medals at the 2004 Choir Olympics in Bremen, Germany.

One of Iowa Youth Chorus' rehearsal locations is the historically restored Temple for Performing Arts in downtown Des Moines. At the Temple for Performing Arts classes and lessons of voice and instruments are taught amid the scents of nearby coffee shops and eateries.
