From the Farewell Concert by the Youth Chorale
With a Lily in Your Hand - Eric Whitacre
Eric Whitacre is a rising star among American composers. His piece With a Lily in Your Hand exploits
rhythmic and textural nuance with abandon. The text is by the Spanish poet Federica Garcia Lorca and translated
by Jerome Rothenberg. This is challenging 21st century music beautifully performed.
El Guayaboso
- Guido López-Gavilán
Guido Lopez-Gavilan is a Cuban composer. His El Guayaboso is festive music that tells a nonsense story. The
title refers to lies and exaggerations. For example one line says, "I saw a mosquito wearing trousers." In this
arrangement voices sing percussive parts as well as a three part harmonization of the text. Thus the music
combines a rich harmonic lexicon with an Afro-Cuban rhythmic puzzle of dizzying complexity.
Ain't
No Grave Can Hold My Body Down - arranged by Caldwell and Ivory
Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory are well known for their lively arrangments of spirituals and "Ain't No Grave..."
doesn't disappoint. The origin of the text of the refrain is unknown, but was popular with gospel singers in the
American South in the first half of the 20th century. The text and tunes of the verses are not based on traditional
material, but was composed by the arrangers.
And The Glory of the Lord
- Handel
George Frederick Handel's Messiah was first performed in 1741. And the Glory... is from the first act of this 3 act
Oratorio. The text is only three lines, but Handel composed a baroque masterpiece that his thrived in the choral
repertoire for over 250 years.
